Chiara was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia where she attended the French Immersion Programs at Trafalgar Elementary School and Kitsilano Secondary School. At Kits, Chiara excelled in academics and athletics. Her studious efforts were recognized in the form of multiple Principal’s List accreditations. She also excelled in both written and oral French and obtained her DELF B2 Certificate highlighting her high degree of competency in the French language. She balanced her academic life with sports, as a key member of both the volleyball and basketball teams. In particular, she assumed the role of captain for the Kitsilano Blue Demons senior basketball team.
Following her high school diploma, Chiara moved to Kingston, Ontario to pursue her post-secondary studies in Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University in 2014. During this time, she continued playing recreational, intramural basketball. After joining the Queen’s Biomedical Innovation team and having completed her undergraduate thesis on the antibacterial activity of graphene materials, she developed an interest for the application of chemistry and engineering in a biomedical context. She plans to pursue graduate studies in Biomedical Engineering starting in the fall of 2019.
During her undergraduate years, Chiara was employed as a summer student at the Vancouver Prostate Centre (VPC) under the supervision of Dr. Amina Zoubeidi. She worked closely with post-doctoral fellow Alastair Davies who was a recipient the prestigious Young InvestigatorAward. She worked specifically on the characterization of stem cell and neuroendocrinephenotypes in the progression of prostate cancer. Having completed her degree in December 2018, Chiara is back at VPC conducting research on protein crystallography with research associate Adeleke Aguda.
Chiara was raised speaking Italian with her mother and has been fortunate to spend her summer holidays in the Mediterranean surrounded and enriched by scenic views, cultural traditions and delicious food. In her spare time, Chiara enjoys Vancouver’s great outdoors and capturing her experiences on camera. During her time off you can find her cooking up a storm, preparing and enjoying mouth-watering meals with like-minded friends and family.
